As Parents we ALL have times when we want our kids to do something that they don’t want to do. This happens because our kids are developing their ability to make choices and control the world around them. This is healthy and it’s something we want to encourage. What do you do with a Power Struggle? So, what then do we do when our kids want something and we want them to do something else? Part of t ...[Read More]
Program for Parents/Guardians
“Parents are the most powerful people in their child’s life. The students I see that have the greatest success are those whose parents are fully involved and present in their lives.”
Are you the parent of a Deaf child?
Are you afraid of judgement from other parents or family members?
Are you so overwhelmed with being a parent that you aren’t connecting to your child?
James Smith, author and co-owner of Deaf Sense LLC, has joined with ASL Concepts to provide a high quality ASL curriculum to youth. The ASL Concepts’ “One Fine Day” ASL Curriculum is coming out in June 2018 featuring James Smith’s book, “A Story of ASL” in paperback!
The curriculum is a themed American Sign Language instructional unit based on the classic Armenian folktale “One Fine Day” by Nonny Hogrogian. It is for children 3rd-5th grade. This curriculum includes 25 specific lessons focusing on the following ASL Concepts: Conditional “if”, Variations in ASL, Use of “Why” and “For-For”, Role-Shifting, Directional Signs, Descriptions, Reference Points, and the 5 Parameters of ASL.
This curriculum also includes free instructional videos from the very talented Deaf Storyteller Patrick Fischer, aka “Mr.Shiney Head.”
The curriculum also includes an optional Study Guide to Andy Russell Bowen’s “A World of Knowing” as well as STEAM activities such as Tanagrams, Genetics, Foxes, Maps, and Engineering. Curriculum and supplemental kit (extra books and STEAM supplies) are available July of 2018.
Don’t just learn American Sign Language, open your eyes to a whole new culture! Visit www.aslconcepts.com for insight into this and other exciting books releasing this summer!
CUSTOMER REVIEW: “So much more than I was looking for! Having heard that a large percentage of the population on Martha’s Vineyard knows sign language, I was looking for a simple explanation of why. This children’s book is so much more. A fun exploration of the history of American Sign Language, how it was developed, and how it both educated and empowered members of the deaf community for decades. I recommend it not only for members of the deaf community, but I believe children learning sign language at school or Scouts (or in a similar way) will also enjoy it.”

Have you ever wanted to make a change? Maybe you would like to improve your child’s school? Change something in the community or even the government? This month we remember one group who made a huge difference at Gallaudet. They also changed the Deaf community as a whole, forever. The Deaf President Now (DPN) protest was a huge success. It is taught in every beginning ASL course and any clas ...[Read More]
Last week I introduced the idea of Maslow’s Hierarchy and focused on the need to create a sense of belonging. It is important to create that sense of belonging in the family. Today we’ll look at outside the family to foster a sense of belonging in the youth around us. Both deaf children and hearing children that are connected to the world of deafness in some way need to develop this “Deaf Sense.” ...[Read More]

What was valuable to me was realizing that even in moments where I didn’t think I could do anything, changing my thoughts and making small changes could make a huge difference. Mariposa Mentoring is amazing. Lynell can really help you realize what you want in life.
“Lynell is great at mentoring! She helped me through some major blocks in regards to loving and forgiving myself. I feel that I have more direction and desire to fulfill my personal purpose in life.”
I love all the Deaf Sense videos! My daughter is a big fan too. The kids are ASL role models for her!
Your posters that I bought from you have helped my students in my class recognize some of the deaf achievements and triumphs. For example, Matt Hamill and John Maucere both are on the poster. So when my students see this, they ask me if I am going to show more of the others who are successful. My students realize that there are more of other deaf people who want to be successful and be normal just like every one. Now my students will walk up to our 7 deaf students at the school and sign to them. These deaf students feel like they are more accepted.
